Nitrogen Pools in Tropical Plantations of N2-Fixing and Non-N2-Fixing Legume Trees under Different Tree Stand Densities

چکیده

We investigated the nitrogen pools in monocultures of legume species widely used reforestation Brazil that have contrasting growth and acquisition strategies. The plantations were established with slow-growing N2-fixing tree Anadenanthera peregrina var. peregrina, fast-growing non-fixing Schizolobium parahyba amazonicum. measurements N biomass soil followed standard methods carried out on 54 experimental plots. N2 fixation evaluated by abundance natural 15N accretion methods. content was similar magnitude between stand densities. showed amounts biomass, but divergent patterns accumulation, as well signature leaves. S. accumulated most stem, while A. roots However, accumulation less constrained environment than stands. percentage derived from stands decreased increase density. biological estimates depended method response to environment.

Ureide Production by N2-fixing and Non-n2-fixing Leguminous Trees

Xylem-sap and stem and leaf extracts from 35 species, comprising 14 genera, of leguminous trees were analyzed for ureides, nitrate and a-amino acids. Trees were either inoculated with Rhizobium or fertilized with NH4NO3. The dominant form of soluble N in stem and leaf extracts and xylem sap was a -amino acids. Certain non-N2-fixing species, i.e. Tamarindus indica and Adenanthera pavonina, produ...

Low genomic diversity in tropical oceanic N2-fixing cyanobacteria.

High levels of genomic and allelic microvariation have been found in major marine planktonic microbial species, including the ubiquitous open ocean cyanobacterium, Prochlorococcus marinus. Crocosphaera watsonii is a unicellular cyanobacterium that has recently been shown to be important in oceanic N2 fixation and has been reported from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in both hemispheres, and th...

N2-fixing tropical legume evolution: a contributor to enhanced weathering through the Cenozoic?

Fossil and phylogenetic evidence indicates legume-rich modern tropical forests replaced Late Cretaceous palm-dominated tropical forests across four continents during the early Cenozoic (58-42 Ma). Tropical legume trees can transform ecosystems via their ability to fix dinitrogen (N2) and higher leaf N compared with non-legumes (35-65%), but it is unclear how their evolutionary rise contributed ...

Comparative Genomic Analysis of N2-Fixing and Non-N2-Fixing Paenibacillus spp.: Organization, Evolution and Expression of the Nitrogen Fixation Genes

We provide here a comparative genome analysis of 31 strains within the genus Paenibacillus including 11 new genomic sequences of N2-fixing strains. The heterogeneity of the 31 genomes (15 N2-fixing and 16 non-N2-fixing Paenibacillus strains) was reflected in the large size of the shell genome, which makes up approximately 65.2% of the genes in pan genome. Large numbers of transposable elements ...

Controlling Cyanobacterial Blooms in Hypertrophic Lake Taihu, China: Will Nitrogen Reductions Cause Replacement of Non-N2 Fixing by N2 Fixing Taxa?

Excessive anthropogenic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) inputs have caused an alarming increase in harmful cyanobacterial blooms, threatening sustainability of lakes and reservoirs worldwide. Hypertrophic Lake Taihu, China's third largest freshwater lake, typifies this predicament, with toxic blooms of the non-N2 fixing cyanobacteria Microcystis spp. dominating from spring through fall. Previou...
